Universal Design...for Congregations!
One size does not fit all

Opening paragraph
This edition of Connections focuses on Universal Design for Congregations. Universal Design is an approach to creating an environment that can be accessed, understood, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of age or abilities. UD provides a flexible blueprint for programming, organization, technology, services and physical spaces by recognizing that a one-size-fits-all solution does not suit everyone’s needs.
Page Content

A common example of Universal Design is curb cuts or sidewalk ramps. While curb cuts are essential for people in wheelchairs and walkers, they are useful and beneficial for everyone…. bicyclists, parents pushing strollers, delivery carts, etc. In this edition of Connections you will find stories of congregations that have re-designed worship, communications, space, and leadership roles to provide opportunities for full congregational engagement by those with disabilities. In each case, the experience of all the members of the church, with disability or without, has been divinely enriched in the process. Read on and be inspired!

Read more about Universal Design from the National Authority on Disability and the Calvin College Institute of Christian Worship, Free Resources on Universal Design.
