Myalgic Encephalitis
Myalgic encephalitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, is a condition that causes severe fatigue that is not improved with rest, problems thinking and sleeping, dizziness, pain, and other symptoms. People with ME may get worse after any kind of physical or mental exertion, requiring an extended period of rest. About 1 in 4 people with ME are confined to bed at some point in their illness.[i] ME can occur in in cycles, with periods of remission followed by flare-ups of the illness, making it difficult to make plans with friends and family.

Tips for Caring for those with ME
For Congregations
- Individuals with ME have often been misunderstood and disbelieved due to the invisible nature of the illness. Someone can look healthy but be quite ill. If someone asks for assistance or an accommodation, don’t doubt their need or their suffering.
- Provide online streaming of services.
- Having access to community virtually is an important lifeline for people with ME. Offer an online small group for those who cannot attend small groups or Sunday school classes in person.
For Individuals
- Provide a listening ear. Many people with ME are isolated, and the illness can make it difficult to sustain relationships with family and friends. Simply extending an offer to listen can be helpful.
- Offer to run errands or deliver groceries.
- Offer to bring someone a meal.
